• Emily Oster, an economist who writes about parenting and health matters, wrote an article about vasectomies this week. Since I recently had one and it wasn’t terrible at all I thought I’d mention my experience with it on Twitter. I didn’t think this would be contraversial at all — it was a personal and, I thought, reasonable decision to make and I hoped my comment would reassure others who were on the fence — but I got a couple of nutty replies implying that I was somehow virtue signalling and that I had “mutilated myself into a eunuch”. Weird takes.

I wonder whether this is a taste of how it feels to be a woman, with one’s own reproductive health becoming a matter that concerns dorks (in this case, virility-obsessed dorks) on the other side of the world. My decision was relatively trivial to make and yet it still feels rubbish to be insulted over it. It certainly made me think about how much worse it can be.

  • I bet Elon owning Twitter will make it friendlier. To nutters.

  • The baby’s sleep is still pretty wonky. Sometimes she falls asleep easily, sometimes she makes a huge protest. Sometimes she wakes at 4am, sometimes 7am. I hope it improves.

  • I had to sell some things on eBay. My brain must be broken because now, in 2022, I find the site as confusing to use as it was 20 years ago.

  • A coworker of Nanda gave her a bottle of fancy cachaça a while ago and on Saturday we cracked it open in honour of making it halfway through the weekend. And guess what? It was water! Someone man in the middled it and nicked the booze.

  • The inlaws are coming to stay this week. The extra kid help will be welcome and will hopefully let me get on with reducing the amount of stuff we have to move to Switzerland to the absolute minimum. (There’s still going to be a literal truckload though.)
