Weeknotes 26: mint pie
-
I have to say I was not feeling at all festive this year, what with an imminent move and the relentless grind of kids to handle. But the toddler greatly enjoyed all the stuff like leaving out a mince pie (“mint pie”) and advent calendars and we had a nice Christmas Day at my sister’s place. Nanda’s gift to me was a pair of socks with our kids’ faces on them and they are brilliant.

The house sale is unstuck. We’re getting a bit less money now but at least things are moving along. I’ll be glad when this is done.

I set up gokrazy to run the hacky bluetooth temperature collector I wrote. It’s a really nice project and it’s obvious that a lot of attention has been paid to its ergonomics — all the tools are high quality and consistent, it’s easy to update an image once deployed, and so on. There’s a recipe for running Tailscale on it, which would make for a convenient VPN endpoint at home.
I’m very tempted to try router7 by the same author (and built on top of gokrazy) for our internet connection in Switzerland.

I did an escape room with my family on Thursday. It was great fun! We got out with 6 seconds to spare! I was a bit bummed that we needed a few hints but less bummed because we apparently needed fewer than most teams. The game itself was well designed in that it wasn’t organized linearly — while it was possible to solve one puzzle before all of its hints were collected, thus skipping a chunk of the game, there were still several key checkpoints that needed to be reached in order to finish the whole thing. If I had one criticism of the game it’d be that it was a bit padlock heavy, but overall 8/10 would recommend.
